this morning, after my editor & i made the decision to let the police know what i’d uncovered, he placed a call to the station. asked to speak to the detective in charge of the arson case. at this point, though we knew that the arson was an afterthought, it was still the best way to get connected to someone. while he sat on hold, i sat across the desk scribbling a single sentence onto a notepad. just in case. ASK IF HE KNOWS THE HUSBAND’S REAL NAME. someone picked up on the other end of the line. after a brief intro, he clarified that he was calling to share info, not ask for it. almost instantly after bringing up the guns, it devolved into a series of “uh huhs.” then he hung up. “he said he’d heard that too. said to meet him at noon.”
